! Applications: the key facts

  1. 01

    Typical documents

Almost every application needs: ID, registration certificate, tax ID, recent proof of income, rental contract or service-charge statement and bank statements. Copies are usually fine; show originals if asked.

  2. 02

    Applying online

Many benefits can be applied for online – often with BundID and the online ID function. It saves trips and you get a confirmation of receipt.

  3. 03

    Deadlines and back pay

Many benefits only start from the month you apply. So apply right away – you can hand in missing documents later.

  4. 04

Check the decision, object if needed

You can lodge an objection (Widerspruch) within one month of receiving a decision you think is wrong. The deadline is stated in the notice.

    § 84 SGG, § 70 VwGO

  5. 05

    Duty to report changes

Tell the authority immediately about changes in income, rent or household – otherwise you may have to pay money back.

    § 60 SGB I

  6. 06

    Help with forms

Advice centres of welfare organisations, consumer advice centres and many cities help with forms for free.
