FAQ

Q01Who issues the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung?

The Wohnungsgeber: usually the landlord, a property manager acting for them or – for a sublet – the main tenant. If you own the flat you issue it yourself.

Q02What if my landlord refuses?

The landlord must issue it within two weeks of moving in. If they refuse, tell the registration office, which can fine them. Register on time anyway and explain the situation.

Q03Is a 'favour' confirmation allowed?

No. Providing an address for registration when nobody actually lives there can be fined up to €50,000 (§ 19(6), § 54 BMG).
