How it is calculated

STEP 01Minimum incomeParents need at least €900 (couples) or €600 (single parents) gross a month.
STEP 02Maximum per child€297 per child (2026), reduced by 45 % of the child's maintenance.
STEP 03Parents' needsParents' standard rate plus their share of housing costs; income above reduces it by 45 % (earnings) or 100 % (other income).
STEP 04Priority checkWith Kinderzuschlag, Kindergeld and Wohngeld the family's needs must be covered – otherwise basic income support takes priority.
