How Wohngeld is calculated

STEP 01Rent (M)Rent incl. service charges without heating, capped at the maximum for your rent level plus climate component; plus heating relief.
STEP 02Income (Y)Annual income of all members minus work expenses, 10 % flat for each of tax, health/care and pension contributions, minus allowances – divided by 12.
STEP 03FormulaWohngeld = 1.15 × (M − (a + b·M + c·Y) · Y), with legal coefficients per household size, rounded to whole euros.
STEP 04MinimumNo Wohngeld below €10 a month.

FAQ

Q01Who can get Wohngeld?

Tenants and owners on low incomes who don't receive benefits that already cover housing costs (e.g. basic income support). It depends on household size, income, rent and rent level.

Q02Will Wohngeld change in 2027?

A bill plans new rent levels and changes to the heating component for 2027; it has not been passed yet. The calculator uses the values valid until 31 December 2026.
